Een speler die niet bang is om belangrijke schoten te maken, verantwoordelijkheid neemt en overstroomt van zelfvertrouwen. Een fijne balans om zo’n speler te coachen, want je hebt hem nodig in deze opportunistische wereld, terwijl hij zijn team (soms) benadeelt. Hij wint overigens ook wedstrijden. Vraag dat maar aan Bamberg, dat vorig seizoen dacht dat ze het onverslaanbaar geachte CSKA op de knieën kregen met nog 8 seconden te spelen. Tot Teodosic de driepunter raak schoot.

The modern world has become more and more self-centered and basketball has naturally followed this trend. Even European national squad rely far less on team-work and depend heavily on NBA stars, providing those players extraordinary freedom within the offense. NBA phenoms, who we usually see dribbling the ball needlessly and who call for isolation plays in order to hit that buzzer beater and ultimately become a hero, are being shown as role models. They are on TV more, they are paid more and they are respected more. How can a child understand the important of team work when he just sees stars saving games with their egoistic long-range shooting?
It’s not surprising that Team USA continues to dominate in international play. Because all the others, instead of developing their own characteristics and style of play, are just trying to imitate Team USA, trying to send more and more players into the NBA and beat the giant with his very same tools, which is nearly impossible. Teodosic, first of all, has to change his attitude towards basketball, put his ego aside, think about his talents and how he can be more useful to the team. His game not only needs better three-point shooting or physical conditioning but some maturity, balance and altruism.
Vooral de laatste alinea is prikkelend. Er is een trend om basketbal steeds meer te gaan spelen in 1-tegen-1 situaties en mismatches te creëren en uit te spelen. Dat werkt met een atletisch team, maar de vraag is of het voldoende is om de USA te verslaan. Het is vaak wel genoeg om je naaste concurrenten te verslaan. Het is ook een mooie uitdaging voor het Nederlandse basketbal. Kunnen we een stijl ontwikkelen waarin we kunnen verrassen en teams iets anders laten doen? Letland nam heel veel driepuntsschoten en kreeg er weinig tegen, een duidelijke keuze en ze zijn gekwalificeerd. Misschien moeten we ook iets bedenken waarmee we ons kunnen onderscheiden, waarmee we het talent dat we hebben optimaal gebruiken en ons een identiteit aanmeten waarmee vanaf de jongste jeugd gespeeld kan worden. Het zal in ieder geval richting geven.
